REVIEW FOR FUTURE ME WHEN I FORGET THAT I EVEN READ THIS BOOK:
This was sobering and awful and beautiful. You will think about it a lot.
The quote: “There is no name to be spoken, but I am recognised by each of the women present, clasped around their lifted hands, heavy on their hearts. I am their fears, and their lucky escapes, their anger, and their wariness. I am their caution and their yesterdays, the shadow version of themselves all those nights they have spent looking over shoulders, or twining keys between fingers. A man speaks to the crowd, entreats his gender to do better; people clap, cheer, but it is the silence of the women that binds up the candlelight, sends it skyward, a flare in search of every lost sister. So that when the man’s passion is spent, it is the quiet rage of women that lingers, can be seen, glittering, from above. Long after all the little fires have been extinguished, and the mourners have moved on.”

Before You Knew My Name by Jacqueline Bublitz
⭐⭐⭐⭐
I really enjoyed this book and I wasn’t expecting to!
I loved both Alice and Ruby (maybe Alice a little bit more) but they both just felt so real and I was rooting for them the whole time!
Beautifully written! I really loved how the author explored Alice’s character after death as well as while she was living! A completly new take that I haven’t read before and I loved it!
This book had me hooked! I would definetly recommend!
(I would have loved some more moments from the Ruby’s perspective).

Perhaps this is one that is Not For Me. I found the main ingenue murdered girl completely unbelievable - too precious and also too world weary, the most egregious manic pixie dream girl. And then this push over Australian woman was completely unsympathetic and annoying as well. All around too pornographic in the details of the violence, and everyone took too long to solve the mystery.
Graphic: Misogyny, Rape, Sexual violence, Suicide, Toxic relationship, Violence, Stalking, Murder, Toxic friendship
Minor: Gore, Death of parent, Alcohol, Injury/Injury detail

Powerful and devastating
Atrociously bad.
Reads as if it was written by a pre-teen trying to write chick-lit.
Constant misandric subtext, with perhaps the only exception being towards a gay male character.
Some of this even reads like it's the author's own experience when browsing internet forums, rather than that of a character.
Sure, this is a debut novel, but I've read other debut novels (eg. Outlander / Cross Stitch) which are streets ahead of this in even the basics such as plot, pacing, and characterisation.
I only finished this because I'm a completionist.

The narrative felt bogged down by its philosophical leanings, making for a slow journey.
