this book has broody shifters, entitled vampires, witches, and mystery magic. I feel like its going to be a very slow burn romance as well...romance but without smut (so if you have to have the heat this might not be for you).

It too me a little while to get into the book and I feel like at times our fmc was a bit repetative in the beginning. but overall the story/plot was interesting and I found myself enjoying the banter between our broody shifter and fmc.

Probably the most interesting thing about the book is that it manages to cram in every single trope of the urban fantasy genre without putting any kind of even mildly intriguing spin on any of them. That might have still left it mildly entertaining if it was competently executed but the writing is very flawed on a basic level. I am talking things like three people in suits attack our heroine, she puts down four of them and the fifth pulls a gun on her or our characters are sitting in an office talking and suddenly one of them puts the car in drive?!? There is just no flow, sense of space and location or continuity in actions or emotions. Also it not only has a bad case of tell-instead-of-show but it constantly undermines the thing it tells us.

Over the course of a single paragraph we are told that shifters and vampires are really badass fighters, watch as a tiny girl easily takes them out when they ambush and outnumber her then have no one question whether she might be something other than a regular human. The first time it happened might have been unintentionally comical but the general philosophy of the author seems to be that anything worth writing once is worth writing over and over again until the readers' eyes start glazing over from boredom. I won't even get into how poorly the "romance" subplot was handled except to say it stared out at completely cringey and uncomfortably abusive and just got more boring and less engaging from there.

I would call this a good candidate for the most boring book I'll read this year but I am pretty sure I won't even remember its existence in a few weeks. Even the ways in which it was bad were boring and uninspired.

About 25 years after a supernatural war/cullling

So I apparently really enjoy reading books about supes who have to hide their powers. It's very sad that because of the decisions and actions of a few in power that a whole race is sentenced to death. The testosterone in this book is choking. Gareth's I can handle because there is a mutual attraction. But Connor's makes me sick as well as Lucas'. The book ends on a cliffhanger while making you excited to continue the rest of the series.

4 her sassy mouth gets her in trouble faster than her magic stars!!

The sarcasm is strong in Levy and I loved every minute of it. She is the kind of female character I can always back in a book, she kicks ass and doesn’t take names. Her “kind” are supposed to be killers, you learn very early on that Levy is no killer. I instantly took a liking to most of the side characters which means I will like this series very much. It’s always nice when the best friend always has your back, and her bff definitely does. I do feel bad that she has to lie to everyone about who she is. I like to think of Levy as kind of a hybrid witch, she is more powerful than a normal witch, yet I’m not one hundred percent sure yet what makes her so powerful.

In this world all of the supernatural are kind of out in the open, but no scary out in the open. There is an order to it. They have a council who rules over everything and makes sure no one steps out of line. I liked the idea of where the council meets and how everything is warded and done. The idea of someone battling Levy and the fight scenes were very well plotted out. Overall I’m super excited to dive back into the next book and see where this supernatural world is going to bring us next.

Double-Sided Magic is book one in the Legacy series by McKenzie Hunter and narrated by Stacey Glemboski.

This is my first taste of McKenzie Hunter and narrator Stacey Glemboski.

Double-Sided Magic started off a little bumpy due to some repetition in the dialogue that centered around the world-building and why the Legacy’s must hide, but it soon smoothed out and I was swept away.

Levy is a Legacy, a creature that is supposed to not exist. They where hunted and all killed off, but some believe they still live and so, they are still hunted to this day. Levy hides, lives like a human, and try's to stay out of the way, but soon finds herself rubbing shoulders with the leader of the Supernatural Guild who will kill her if he knew what she is. Levy is not like her ancestors, but for those that lived through what the Legacy did; they don’t care. She doesn’t seek power and doesn’t want what happened in the past to happen again. She just wants a normal live. I really enjoyed Livy.

We are treated to action, adventure, a murder mystery, and a plot that runs deep and won’t conclude in this installment. There is also a possible budding romance, but that is in the background. Not sure what to make of the love interest, yet.

Audio: I had a good time with the audiobook. Stacey Glemboski did a good job on the different voices and I could pick out all the characters. The narrator kept the story flowing and by the end I wanted to dive into the next audiobook in the Legacy series.

Double-Sided Magic was a bit slow to start, but by the end I wanted more and went out and bought the next audiobook. I can’t wait to see where the overall ARC goes and the possible romance. If you enjoy Urban Fantasy in all its uniqueness; then this novel might be for you.

Interesting new series

I'm always looking for new urban fantasy series. I enjoy this author's other series, so I thought I'd give this a try. I enjoyed it. There were times when I just wanted the heroine to stop hiding and kick everyone's butt. Looking forward to the next one.

Set in a world where the supernatural have been 'outed' and are trying very hard to live side-by-side with the Humans, Levy Michales is trying to keep up with life without exposing her dark secrets. Unfortunately for her someone has dragged her into the eyeline of the supernatural council and she has attracted the attendion of the head boos-man who is determined to figure out just who and what she is.
.
Loved this one for the punchy heroin, sultry vampires and broody shifters. Very easy reading, loads of action and the hints ofa slow-burn romance blossoming.
.
Picking up the second one now...

The book was entertaining but unpolished. There were phrases that felt awkward and many places where it was difficult to tell who was speaking. None of the characters spoke with a unique voice, adding to the confusion. There were reminders later in the book (eg: "the vampire club Savannah frequented") which were completely unnecessary and made it seem like the book was maybe originally issued as a serial. Author spent more time describing clothing than world-building. Last but not least, I was getting a pretty strong Kate Daniels vibe from the main character and love interest. There were some striking similarities that hopefully the author can mitigate in the next book. I'll try the next one.
