So much unnecessary stuff here. The last third of the book tripped along, but there are entire story lines and characters that utilize atelier did absolutely nothing to move it along (Pwnage — completely unnecessary storyline.) You’ll notice that it took me over a year to read this — I kept going back out of stubbornness. It’s finished. On to more enjoyable reading.

The writing, the satirizing of American culture of which he is 100% on point, the overarching theme, the depth of the characters, all amazing and so many times I went whoa! that was really something! earns a 5. But not to pile on what a lot of others have already indicated, some parts are unnecessarily long, like the microscopic details given on the video game needed some editing, imo, so 4.75. Having said that, I do highly recommend this book, it is such a ride throughout American culture, historic moments, the craziness of family, the unpredictableness of family and friends, and the best line I've experienced in a long time, something like we are all stars in our own stories but need to remember we are only supporting characters in other peoples.

The first 70% of the book goes like turtle-slow which makes you confused about what this book is about because it tries to capture such a broad range of stories of different characters. The last 30% is where the secrets reveal. But does it worth all the trudging on the former 70%? Not really. I wanted to give it a 2.5 stars but as the last 30% is better and redeem the story itself so 3 stars it is.

I really appreciated this book, but I didn't "like" it. It was Well written: sweeping multiple generations, with a commentary on society that is remarkably relevant given recent election results... So I do recommend it. But I didn't really "like" reading it. It was too much. Too long. Too much commentary on the details of an online gaming world for example, or many other inner thoughts of people that were interesting, but made me tired.
