Asterisk next to the rating is that i listened to this exclusively while driving. I always find material with a lot of detailed components to be difficult to absorb this way, but the audiobooks are the only thing that my library has for this series. I suspect if I physically read this the rating would be up to 4.5 or so.

At first a standard military series set in a France Analogue, the discovery of ancient magic and demons begins to wreak change on the world, and these two plots weave together to form an interesting military campaign fantasy.

Right now I can’t decide if this is a 2.75 or 3.25 for me. Marcus annoyed me to no end, and Winter only really got to shine near the end. The beginning drags a lot, but it does pay off for Winter’s growth and arc through the story.
Bad part: some graphic elements are involved that are not used to actually do anything with them. These graphic things happen to women, if you catch my drift. It’s a short blurb, but no one is punished and Marcus is against it but actually protects the guy who did it. Another reason I did not like Marcus. I just don’t like it when something like this is brought up and not given actual weight. Like the use is just thrown in.

Perfectly good story. Not my subgenre.
The story is compelling and the characters are engaging but there is too much description of military maneuvering for my taste. I don't need to know the minutia of tactics and strategy to enjoy the story. That being said I thoroughly enjoyed the story and am looking forward to reading the rest of the series!!
The magic was cool. The battles were cool. Hell, even the nitty-gritty daily routine of the army, full of rosters and supply lists, was cool. In fact, I am starting to suspect that is my favorite part of books about wars, the logistics.
The characters were fun, and the mystery is just the right amount of mysterious. Looking forward to getting some answers.
PS: you can totally tell this book was written by a man. After months of trekking through the desert none of the women worried about getting their period....

Interested to see where all this goes. I just really enjoy settings like this.

So far so good. I look forward to reading more of this series.
