Every time I picked this book up, it ate my head. I'd swear I was just going to read a couple pages while I had a snack, while I waited for a game to load, anything. Then I'd look up, too much time would have passed, and I wouldn't have accomplished whatever I intended to. I eventually gave up and finished the book so I could attempt to rejoin life as a functional human being.

Needless to say, I really liked it. Terrific battles, great mythos, fantastic characters, brisk and absorbing story. Now I'm going to have to read all the rest of them. So they, too, can eat my head. Dang it.

Wexler seemed to have done a lot of groundwork with this book. My brain wearied at some of the battle preparations around the mid-mark, though he seemed to know his business. What started as a standard military fiction began to slowly introduce fantasy elements and, before I knew it, the last quarter ended in a rip-roaring fantastical display. High 4.

I can say that as a military fiction, it was very entertaining. As a world building fantasy novel... It fell on it's face a often. Still, a decent little read.

I really liked this even though I'd not normally be into military books.

The main characters have depth and their trajectory and development of the relationships kept me going through the arduous campaign and battles.
I had to read right through with no dipping into other books on the side. Feel convinced the next installment will be just as gripping and look forward to more of the main characters and hopefully of some of the secondary players too.
