This is quite a fun one. As other reviewers mentioned, it is a little predictable, but I don't think it would have been during its initial publication.

Even still, while I like a good murder mystery, I also like when the solution of the mystery isn't so much a villain, but rather accidents, misunderstandings, or animals. Like in this case!

Maybe it isn't as exciting, but it makes the story stand out.

This is one of the very few stories by Doyle narrated only by Holmes. I read on wiki that this was because Doyle had initially intended for Holmes to "chronicle his own defeat" by having an expert give him the solution. I don't think Doyle's fans would have liked that though, and maybe he didn't think so either because Holmes solves it as usual!

While the post World War One stories are alleged by the Doyle estate to show a much different Holmes than the public domain stories, I think that some of their lawyers should avoid using the 7% solution. Nothing special about this story, one way or the other. A fun, light read.
