What a beautifully and eloquently written story! I am not surprised at all that this my new favourite from Favel Parrett. I may not have been able to relate to the history but I felt every word written about the setting, the joy of food, language barriers and most of all the love and hardships of family.

I really appreciated all those aspects of the novel, particularly the food! I actually made my own hazelnut crescent biscuits!

This book had such a profound impact on me which I didn’t expect but I absolutely adore. This just made me so happy, and so nostalgic to remember times with my own grandparents

In a world that is sometimes bleak and depressing, which is often represented in the novels we read (well, I read at least), this was a breath of fresh air.

I loved Favel Parrett's previous novels, the first of which, 'Past the Shallows', was excellent but incredibly grim and heart-wrenching. And while this novel was not 'light-hearted' or frivolous, it was beautiful and, I'm happy to say, not dark or overly confronting.

I think I benefitted from having attended an event where Parrett spoke about the basis of her story, the fact that so much of it was rooted in the experiences of her family, and heard her read excerpts aloud. For this reason I had her voice in my head as I read, and I had a clear understanding of her personal connection to the story. This made my reading experience just that little bit more special.

This book is quietly beautiful, and although not plot-driven or dramatic it is definitely worth a read. A wonderful Australian female author, who is absolutely the loveliest in real life by the way!
