My first Morrison novel as an adult! I've only read Beloved, and that was as a teen. Now I've decided to work my way through her books chronologically.

In The Bluest Eye, Morrison asks: What did it mean to be young, poor, black, "ugly", rejected, and unloved in 20th Century America?  What is beauty, and what happens when your own is invisible to you?

This was a dark, heavy, and uncomfortable read. A lot was packed into these 200-odd pages, especially characters with actions and thoughts that make you want to look away at times. Yet, the beautiful, lyrical writing was a joy to consume and certainly made me want to keep on turning the pages.

I'm looking forward to more of Morrison's work!

It’s not often I feel irreversibly torn apart by a book, and pretty much lost for words as a result of the words within it.

The story that unfolds within The Bluest Eye is revealed to us in the first few pages of the book. The plot of the story that is. The language and structure that Morrison uses to tell that story, focusing on each character in turn and piecing the plot together, is what broke my heart.

Although I knew what Pecola’s fate was already, it did not lessen the impact of witnessing her experiences, as well as the experiences of the other members in her family.

As always, Morrison has written a masterpiece that I will definitely come back to despite the sadness it brings.
