Wow. This is an essential read. The writing, the narrative, the characters, and the introspection are all captivating.

Morrison urges us not to excuse the horrific actions of her characters or to dismiss them as mere tragedy. Instead, she wants us to understand their psychological backgrounds and what shaped them into who they are. Early in the book, there’s a poignant quote: "But since why is difficult to handle, one must take refuge in how." We cannot simply label or overlook something terrible because it occurs; we must delve deeper to comprehend the world and the types of people it produces. This understanding is essential for fostering a more vigilant effort to create a better society.

this book was extremely good, but also just... generally rough to get through. toni's prose is beautiful, and there were several times throughout my listen that i had to stop what i was doing and just pay attention--not because it was hard to follow, but because it almost felt wrong to not give it my full attention. the main reason i can't really throw a 5 star on this is because i don't know if i'll return to it. at least not any time soon. i'm angry and i'm sad. need something lighter to recover, and please know that's not at this book's expense or a shot at this book.

just for clarity's sake, the cw for incest and sexual assault go together for one scene. there's another sexual scene before it that started as consensual but became non-consensual on both sides. i'm unsure if i should include 'hate crime' as a cw due to that. if you want clarification:

two characters are caught mid-act by some white men and they order the boy to "keep going" while they watch.
