the best one in the series no doubt

3.5 stars
better than the first book, but i'm only really here for the romance, so I skimmed 90% of this. war is not my cup of tea. but the romance and all the characters involved gained quite a bit of depth in this book, so I'm looking forward to the finale.

ps: far less rape and other troublesome content than there is in the first book. however, if someone is sensitive to those topics, it's probably best they avoid this series regardless.

and this is why we see it through

The enemies-to-lovers is enemies-to-loversing. The tension has been building up since they met and slowly it becomes more than that? They're kind of friend adjacent? Then Damen literally goes into Touch-him-and-you-die mode and shit goes down. Their banter is hilarious and it adds so much to their characterisation and to the story as a whole. Amazing.
And the way the smut isn't there just for the sake of there being smut?! It actually was important to characterise Damen and Laurent (mainly Laurent really - him in that chapter akchiwjdjdicuei I could've cried, I love him so much. He really grew on me throughout this book)?! This is how it's done. I normally don't care for smut in books, but goddamn this was perfect.
The political intruige is so interesting as are the layers of the plans and actions of the characters. Laurent astonished me over and over again in this book.
I am so excited for the third book. I have so many theories and hopes for it, and with how the first two books went, I will not be disappointed I think.

I gobbled this down in less than a day, stayed up late and woke up early to finish it. How is a book largely about military strategising so compelling, how is the central relationship so tense and sexy? How glad am I that I've already bought the third book?!
