“I’ve never seen a throw like that,” said Laurent. “I’ve never seen anything like it. Every time I see you fight, I wonder how it is Kastor got you in chains and onto a ship to my country.”
Significantly better than the first book. But my problems from the first book still stand so I’m not giving this four stars.
This is what I wanted from Captive Prince (the first volume): political intrigue, complex conflicts, twists and turns, and a gripping plot. And I got it in this second instalment.
One of my problems with the first book was the lack of world building, and I saw a huge improvement for it in this book. Characterization was really well done, too. Of course, I would rather stare at a wall for a whole day than talk to Laurent so…
For people that actually like this series if you liked the first instalment then you should like this one as well. It actually makes an attempt at real chemistry between the characters (which would’ve been nice if the first book never happened) and pushes forward a significant plot line.
This one just didn't do it for me. By 20% I already knew it wasn't capturing my attention. By 60% I was skimming and considering a dnf. But it was a buddy read for me so I plowed through. The end of the book was probably the best part. But it ended in a cliffhanger so that negated any good I'd felt the last few pages.
The was nothing in book 2 that came close to redeeming what Laurent did in book 1. Damen proved to be much to noble for his own good. The scheming and treachery in this book was both stomach turning and mind numbing at the same time. I had a hard time following the reveals even when I wasn't bored to tears with the action.
As much as I hate being negative about a book, I hate even more when I've wasted my time on one due to so many rave reviews and recommendations.

Compared to the first book, this one was SO GOOD. I am still iffy about a lot of things but god the drama and the politics swept me up and I could not put the book down…
2024 re-read: 5 stars
Fuck me alllll the way up, Laurent and Damen give me life. Seeing cold as ice Laurent start to trust and open up and be shy and cute MY HEART. Perfect, no notes.
