I wish I could trace back how I ended up with this book. Who recommended it, or what review did I read. Who knows, but what a find! I would never have imagined such a thoughtful contemplation of marriage, education, feminism, and economic theory through the interactions of a madam, a blind prostitute, and an assortment of clientele.

I was unsure at first.
The blurb really drew me in and after a third I wondered about a potential power imbalance between the two central characters.
After asking myself, “was is the point here?”, I took a moment to chastise myself and remember that not every single book must be driven by a plot and that perhaps this is just Mrs Gulliver telling me about when she meet Carità. The second I accepted this, the book got more enjoyable.
Nothing really to gain through reading this but it was a fine little story with what I thought was a happy ending. 3/5
