I started listening to this book but got too impatient so I then finished it by reading it. As normal I skimmed the blurb and went in blind with no idea what to expect. I wasn’t expecting the story I got!

This is a dark story, it starts off being a home invasion, an intense night and ends up being something completely different but no less tense! A story you do not necessarily expect but one you know needs to be told.

A story told by 3 different people, Nina and Angel as the events unfold and Lucas visiting the past and to how they all ended up in the same house. Subjects of abuse are mentioned and handled with care. However, as a reader, you know that the threat is real. The darkness surrounding that character is visceral as it begins to affect the mental health of one of our main characters. It takes hold and does not let go. Even after the resolution, we are shown that things do not just spring back to normal and this made the book have that a much more realistic feel to it.

When we learn the events of that night, it was heartbreaking and the killer is so devoid of emotion that it made it oh so more chilling. To be fair, there was no emotion from that character throughout the book when they were mentioned, a lot of hearsay but when we meet them, Jesus. One thing I will say, if you have Guinea Pigs you might want to steer clear of one scene!

At times an uncomfortable read, at one point it was an incredulous read and the rest there was an unsettling feeling in my stomach as I could hear the ticking of the clock to indicate our time was running out.

I will easily pick up a book by Ms Green again. She has everything I love about the genre. The drama, the conflict, the intensity and the thrill all wrapped up in a bundle for us.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for the ARC of this book in exchange for a honest review.

I had really enjoyed the author's previous books and was thrilled to see that there was a new book.

This book was really enjoyable. I loved how the story played and the suspense was nail-biting. It was really good and one was not sure where the story would go.

I highly recommend this one for anyone who enjoys a good psychological thriller, you will not be disappointed!

Book Review - ‘Don’t You Cry’ by Cass Green ⭐⭐⭐ and a half

Thank you to NetGalley, HarperCollins UK and Cass Green for the chance to read an arc of this novel.

Opening the door in the middle of the night Nina is shocked to see Angel, a young woman she’s met just once; earlier that day when the waitress saved her life when she started choking during an awful blind date. She’s even more surprised when Angel barges into her home threatening her at gunpoint. When Angel’s brother, Lucas, then shows up with a tiny baby hidden inside his coat and blood on his hands Nina fears how this terrible, long night will conclude.

This was the first book I’ve read by Cass Green and I loved the fact that the story immediately grasped my attention. The action and suspense started quickly and you don’t know anymore about why Angel and Lucas are there, what happened to the baby’s mother or what the plan is, than Nina does which puts you on the edge of your seat as she desperately tries to find a way to escape her captivity while ensuring no harm comes to the baby and he is returned home.

What starts as a seemingly clear cut story of two violent individuals committing kidnap and murder soon reveals itself to be more intricate as you see they are just two young, frightened people, trying to do the right thing in a nightmare of their own. As the story progresses you follow Nina in her quest for the truth about who killed Alice and if the stories her captors told her that night are real or just an elaborate ruse for sympathy and to evade justice.

I enjoyed this book but did find that the pace and excitement had a lull in the middle that made it hard to keep interest after such a strong start, which is why I’m giving it 3 stars instead of 4 (I wish we could pick half stars as it would be a 3.5). But then the story and momentum picked up again and had me on the edge of my seat right up until the climax.

'Don't You Cry' is an expertly crafted psychological thriller that also packs quite an emotional punch. Nina is just getting back into the dating game and has a blind date. At the restaurant, she ends up choking with waitress Angel coming to her rescue. Now comes the far-fetched and unbelievable part. Angel later turns up at Nina's door with gun in hand, before her brother Lucas also shows up with blood on his hands and a kidnapped baby in tow. As you can see this is not exactly a probable real-world situation, but what are books for if not to push the boundaries?

I find I am able to suspend my disbelief if the writing style suits me, it is an engrossing tale and the pace is impeccable, all of which in my opinion were present and correct here. Original, twisted and compulsively readable, this is a book that makes your heart race and your palms sweaty. Claustrophobic, suspenseful and chock full of thrills and spills. A cast of truly menacing characters will ensure you keep turning the pages long into the night. Excellent!

Many thanks to HarperCollins for an ARC. I was not required to post a review, and all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

This book has a lot going for it - it's a thoroughly enjoyable and engrossing tale involving a murder, kidnapping of a baby, physical and mental abuse and the kindness of strangers.

It is also well paced and deftly plotted. The characters are so brilliantly portrayed that they seem real and alive. Main character Nina's point of view is told in the first person but the others are told in third person, and this works very well as key facts are hinted at and revealed only slowly. Nina was my favourite character even though she made a few stupid decisions at times (but who wouldn't in such a stressful situation?) and these just made her a more rounded and filled-in character. I thought the police woman was an excellent character too; we didn't know what she was thinking but she was short, smart, tough and red-headed (perhaps she needs her own book)!

A great read which has plenty of humor, sadness, action and strong characters. I'll certainly try other books by the same author.
