Really great world building, loved it! Build up throughout the story was amazing but climax and further on was a bit underwhelming. I like how Mehrs character wasn't loud and about it was sort of a tiny rebel situation which was really nice.
"Empire of Sand" was inspired by Medieval India and it thus offered exciting 'new' mythologies and settings (fantasy is so darn eurocentristic sometimes) without falling into the trap of orientalism or exoticism. This was just a good story that was not inspired by European culture and I liked that. There is so much more out there than just stereotypical sexy desert people for fantasy novels. So well done!
I enjoyed this book although it had some cliché YA tropes like the brooding YA hero and a too modern protagonist in a not so modern society...but it's fantasy, so whatever.
No major issues with the story, I was quite grateful that there was closure in the end and not at least two more novels to wait for.
Four stars!

The author builds a compelling world. Some of the violence is quite graphic and hard to stomach.

This is my second time reading this book and it's even better this time! I love the mythology in this book and how it's not the normal Greek mythology that's used in so many books I read. I also love that this is a standalone book, with the second book being connected, but centering on a different character.
I enjoyed the world of this book. Great, deep characters and writing.
Fun, twists and turns for sure. Good world building for me.
