K. Ancrum books have been on my radar forever - Icarus sounds right up my alley and this didn’t disappoint.

My gosh this was amazing. The possession vibes of ‘The Taking of Jake Livingston’ but the most tender coming of age ghost story mixed with a love story (of all kinds - between friends/parents/community). Achingly tender and shockingly intimate.

I need a new phrase for “it stuck the landing.” It committed and the visualization of how the possession worked was incredibly interesting and I want this to be a movie.

‘It was once though. That James was so scared of never leaving this place, when Hollis was sure he’d make it out.
Hollis would have to stay though.
His bones belonged to this soil.’

‘Hollis didn’t have much power in his body, but he could be clever.’

‘Like eating honey from the fingertips of God?’

This was so weird but I really liked it...? Maybe I'm weird?

I think one of my favortie parts was the ending. I thought it was so refreshing that Hollis and Walt decided to stay in their town and work toward making it a better place. It showed that sometimes a happy ending isn't glamorous; it will be hard work but that's part of the beauty.

I grew up in a small town and I really felt that pressure to "get out" to something "better" when I was younger. So many of my classmates couldn't wait to leave, and those of us that wanted to stay were judged for it to an extent. I liked that Hollis' friends and family didn't judge him for wanting to stay, they supported whatever future he chose for himself as long as it made him happy.

All around, such a completely unique take on the possession idea that ultimately, is a story about love, acceptance, and growing up.

a very intimate, delightfully toxic slowburn. one of the most interesting love stories i've ever read, and it was incredibly engaging despite the meandering start. has a unique setup and format.

i do wish it was new adult though - but, sigh. 17 yr olds x 150+ yr old beings is just ick to me, and i wish we'd supernatural/fantasy media would Just Stop with that. quite a bit of dialogue as well, not a lot of enriched imagery of the small town despite it being quite a large character in relation to both hollis's and walt's stories. a lot of this takes place in Hollis's Head, so it would've been nice to step outside of it for a moment.
