For the first play that I have read by Mishima, I am surprised at his handling of this medium. Granted, plays are different from novels, and I have little experience with plays, yet his management of witty dialogues and tension between the characters was done masterfully. I was taken aback by his skill and I thought this could be considered a great play, however, I have read praise for Mishima directed at his novels and absent for his plays, so I would assume that this is considered a mediocre play.

Of my personal reception of the play, I found it alright at times and the final act detestable. The first two acts created a tension between the characters that I was somewhat attracted to see how things would conclude. I disliked the final act, since Renée decides to become a nun and the atmosphere has calmed down (despite the French Revolution going on!) since the quarrels between the characters no longer focus as much on the Marquis. The discussions on Christianity and how God had healed everyone, as well as Madame de Montreuil’s acceptance and utilization of the Marquis, put me off considerably. Of the one part that I did enjoy in the play: the Marquise's rejection to enter the home after eighteen years of imprisonment.

In summary, the first two acts earned two stars while the final act earned one star. The final act left a serious disliking for the conclusion of the play and I feel inclined to rate the play at one star. However, I find that the acts are independent of each other, and if they are to be related, the first two acts seem far distinct from the final act.

Update
A small note to add that I had left in a word document: "I liked the concept of how the Marquis is now freed at a time when the world resembles him".

Rating Update
Two stars to one star. After much deliberation, I find that the three star-rated segments in this book cannot counter the overall, one star-rated feeling that this book's buildup amounted to nothing, with the final act being "despicable", as the original review stated. The three star-rated segments in the first two acts are very sparse, and the two acts, for their majority, can be considered buildup for the third act. My distaste for the ending is so great, that if a rating below one star existed, it would receive that. The rating type has been changed from 1.5I to 1.25A.
