Call it 3.5 stars.
This was a pretty good ending to the Mistborn second cycle. We all love the characters, and they are fun in this one, too. I will miss them and hope we get a novella or something so we can peek more into their lives. We get Cosmere background, we get secrets. The lens is really zooming out on this universe Sanderson is building. After reading this book, I want to reread other books--on other planets--in the Cosmere, to pick up hints and relive those settings.
I didn't rate this book higher because I felt like the plot fell flat in some ways. The baddies weren't on stage enough; the heroes were more driven by overarching threats that they knew about, without the actors behind those threats being around much to actively antagonize. There is deus ex machina--perhaps not surprising given that there are literal gods (well, supremely powerful being compared to the main characters) involved. Maybe if those gods were more on stage, some of their activities in this story wouldn't feel as unearned.
But mostly I'm disappointed that the previous book set up a lot about this planet, and several other conflicts going on with its peoples, and The Lost Metal doesn't deliver as much follow through as I'd hsve liked. Perhaps it would have taken another 100, 200 pages, or it would have been impossible. Perhaps this stuff was tangential to the main storyline of Wax and Wayne and it would've been inappropriate to explore. Nevertheless, it's a bummer to have so much world building and to know we're moving on to a whole new era next in this series, without exploring the rich present in front of us. Again, well, hopefully there will be a novella or something in the future.
Anyway, I suppose it speaks highly of a book and an author to want more of their worlds. We'll see what era 3 of Mistborn holds!
