2.5 stars....a good premise (written from the POV of the family of a convicted serial killer) but let down badly by a very poor and unbelievable ending................

As always Rachel does not disappoint! This book was amazing and I can’t wait to dig into the next 3 to see what’s going to happen! I mean she could have ended it at this one but there would be so many questions, so I’m glad she didn’t. I didn’t see that ending coming either, which I LOVE!

Gripping read and great plot twists! You are able to meet the characters and get an inside view into Gwen's (Gina's) mind as she fights for her family's wellbeing and safety. Everything is a threat and it shows in her actions. Also, with every plot point comes a subplot where you are thrown into an intense struggle to find the truth, all culminating with the promise of future struggle,  lies, and deceit. This book makes you excited to follow the characters through their life as they work through the turmoil that a simple car crash caused them.

It was an interesting and different spin on a serial killer novel. We follow the family of the serial killer and there was a lot going on to stay interested in the story. The main characters paranoia made it seem like everyone was suspect and some were of something. There have been complaints about it being a cliffhanger ending. While we still are kept hooked to follow more of what will happen with this family, there has been some closure on the particular issues they run into in this book.

I first came across Rachel Cain's works in her Great Library series (lovely YA fantasy/alt universe type books) and when I saw this available through KU audio, I decided to pick it up. I enjoyed the listen. Some/most of the twists I saw coming, but I didn't foresee all of them too far ahead of the characters making the realization in most cases and I think the twists were good ones for having hints leading to them as you're trying to puzzle it out with the mc. There were moments where the mc annoyed me a bit but I also think it demonstrated trauma and fear well. I'd be just as paranoid (or more) as she was. All in all a book that I wanted to keep listening to and following along. I saw another reviewer summarize their reviews with the following questions and I think I'll start using them as well (I wish I could remember who to give proper credit).

Would I recommend it to a friend? Yes
Would I pick up the next book in the series? Yes, but I might give it a bit of a rest in between since they are a bit tense books.
