Another fairly dull entry from CT, though narrated well by Simon Prebble, and suitable for insomnia listening.  Atmospheric chalk horse is the only inspired element.  Burst of exposition at the end, and the classic “but he was already dead when we got there!”

This book didn’t stand out as exceptionally brilliant among the collection of gems that is the Charles Todd library, but it held up to the high standard I’ve come to expect from their mystery novels, and I greatly enjoyed another two days in the company of Inspector Rutledge. Another good one.

This was an OK mystery. I started to lose interest and then I couldn't really remember the characters. I liked the British flavor, but it wasn't fast paced enough for me.

Another enjoyable mystery in the series.

Certainly a well-written book, however not much character development (it is inspired by golden age detective fiction after all) and many characters can sometimes make the plot confusing.

love this series about a man who barely managed to survive WWI and is now trying hard to get his life back together again, and solving murders along the way.

Great characters, complex plots.

I also loved the setting. I've been to Uffington, seen the Horse and Wayland's Smithy.

I love this author. Charles Todd is a collaboration between a mother and a son, one living in Delaware and one in North Carolina. That they were able to write one novel together, much less 11 starring Scotland Yard Inspector Ian Rutledge, seems a miracle. I've read all of the Charles Todd books (why I haven't put them on Goodreads is a mystery to me, but I'll take care of that oversight) in the order in which they were written and I think that helps understand the continuity and development of the books. These books are a must read for anyone who is interested in England after World War I, or anyone who is interested in the impact of war that reaches far beyond the dates of the actual conflict. In this particular book, Rutledge is sent to Berkshire to find out what happened to a man whose war work was so secret that even Rutledge is kept in the dark. The landscape of Berkshire, the persistent voice of Hamish in Rutledge's head, and the Great War are all major characters in this book. Highly recommended.
