5 stars. Gorgeously written mystery that takes place in the 70s in a small town. Nothing is what it seems with this story and it kept me guessing and on my toes at all times. Just when I thought I knew what would happen next Ashton managed to pull the rug from beneath me by taking the story a completely different way. There are a lot of characters in this and they are all flawed and nuanced and felt like real people. There’s so many things that I loved about this book that I couldn’t begin to explain it if I tried. Ashton is an author I definitely want to read more from because I enjoyed this immensely.

I'll be honest, I really struggled with the beginning of this novel, but I'm going to place some of the blame on the audiobook (highly recommend putting this at 1.25 speed) and I came so close to DNF'ing this at 20% because it was such a slog. But I am a masochist and I hate investing that much time into a book simply to abandon it. And, yes, I understand this is a little bit insane. But I am so glad for my stubbornly determined mind because I would have given up on what is a really compelling mystery and a super queer story. This is all the more remarkable because it's set in a small Welsh village in the 1970's. And that's all I can say about this novel without giving anything/everything away.

I'm not going to give any details on the wonderfully woven story, just experience it for yourself. This mystery tale leads down many paths, involves a whole village and brings you gentle reader, to a most satisfying conclusion. The paths are not clear, the village has a tongue that is sharp and never rests and the reader's emotions are wrung like grandma's old bed sheets on laundry day. But, this is the best book I have read this year. Salute to Clare Ashton for a well crafted 6 out of 5 stars story.
