Yes, it is another dystopian series, but this one feels fresh and different. Sometime in the future, the world has been reduced to states because the world can no longer sustain the population and pollution. The Western State and Eastern State is where most people in the US live. There are still people living on the 'outside' who either are preparing more land for the State or don't want to be a part of the State. Drifters are among them; people who do not trust the government.
Faith is hoping that her new school will have a tall boy for her to date. She and her best friend meet a few new people- Hawk, a small, smart kid, Dylan, the mysterious loner, and the popular twins. As Faith finds out more about herself and her destiny, she is set on a path filled with love, betrayal, and pain. There is some violence. Fans of dystopia will love this series. 6th grade and up.

So many feelings! I hated it but I couldn't put it down and I can't find any logical reason not to like it! :( I feel so torn! Be prepared for a large rant (not a review a rant) coming soon!
Read 30% of the book, didn't really like it much at all, decided that life is too short to read lousy books.
This book was certainly promising in the beginning. I love the idea of dystopian worlds and fiction set in them, and was even more excited to find one that had a twist: telekinetic powers. The world building is beautiful, truly well-thought out and fairly unique, though similar in the way all dystopians are. My problem is that we spent much too long in the characters' normal lives without experiencing any major change. I mean, the telekinesis doesn't even begin to be approached until about midway through the book. Plus, there's a short bit in there where the friend of the protagonist is standing outside her window watching her, and when she finds him, she just INVITES HIM INSIDE. Honestly, no matter how good of friends I am with a guy, I'm not inviting him in if I found him at my window in the middle of the night. She proceeds to allow him to sleep next to her, which I can kinda, slightly, barely forgive since she'd got the whole brother-sister relationship going on. But that's not the end. Then, we have ANOTHER guy standing creepily at her window watching both of them sleep. I mean, really? This one got a better rating because of the world since I am a sucker for a good setting, but I could not connect to the characters at all, nor was the plot moving along very well in my opinion.
Eh. I picked it up after seeing it in an Indie Next Picks magazine. The multiple perspectives are not my favorite and I wasn't really into it. I won't be continuing with the series.
I will start by saying I had read reviews stating that this book was mostly mediocre so I had my bar set pretty low but given that dystopian is my current go to genre I had to give this one a chance and I am glad I did! On top being a dystopian setting this book deals with telekinesis, which I have been enjoying lately. This book had its unique elements but also things that made it the same as so many dystopias. There are people within society and there are people outside society. Almost the entire novel is set outside the walls of society. What I found interesting about this world is that everyone chooses when they join society and you do not get punished per say if you choose not to be a member of society. When you are a member of society you have access to more (medicine, TV channels, you know the essentials) and by choosing to be outside the walls you get only what is necessary (plus movies come out at a delayed rate).
The pacing of this book was only OK. I think if the whole book was paced like the second half I would have enjoyed it more. The first half of the book did contain needed world building but also contained many scenes that did not add to the plot in any way. Telekinesis doesn’t even come into past the hallway mark. There was a point where this felt like just a set up for the next book. Also after we start finding out what having a Pulse really means, I felt like we kept getting only half explanations as to how and why people have “pulses”.
I have a bone to pick with Faith’s character. She is supposed to be a smart girl. Not only is she book-smart with her AP/honors classes but she has been living on her own for some time. But what I don’t understand is why she falls so hard for the boys in this book. I felt that there was no reasoning behind her crushes besides “he’s cute”. In the end the romance aspect was satisfactory but that’s only because Dylan’s character finally gets some backstory.
In general I enjoyed this book. There were a few twists in the story that I did not see coming and found pleasantly surprising. If the romance was more convincing and the pacing a little better in the first half, I think I would have loved this book. Overall 4/5 stars.

The beginning was too slow, the writing style sucked, but it got better as the book went on.
