I didn't notice Meyers' writing being so weak & melodramatic in my beloved Twilight series, but this was disappointing. It's a light sci fi soap opera, with some very creative ideas.
FOUR OUT OF FIVE STARS!!!! 7.00 CAWPILE rating.
I ended up liking this book more than I initially thought I would. I’m pretty sure I DNF’d this book a few years back and had NO intention of ever picking it back up. I am glad I did pick it back up because it is a very interesting story.
However...it does not need to be over 800+ PAGES! This book could have easily been 600 pages and gotten everything across just fine. The first 450ish pages I was not enjoying myself but wow wow wow the last 200 pages really saved the book for me.
I will be rewatching the movie for sure here shortly.

Great fun and very distracting. This book kept me completely entertained for most of a flight from BWI to SFO. Even thought I was exhausted I couldn't stop reading.
WAY better than the Twilight series, but still not to be considered amazing by any means. Entertaining sci-fi. Too long, but a pretty enjoyable read.
this is one of my favorite books. it took me awhile to get into it because at first it doesn't seem to make a lot of sense, but once you start to really pay attention you learn to just love the characters. plus it can be hard to want to read it after the twilight saga, you don't want to read something bad by this author if you loved those books. but if you didn't like them, this is a totally different theme. i loved it.

Despite the questionable age gaps and debatable human takeover at the end, this was a fun book!
This book had me switching sides from team Wanda to team Melanie quite a bit. And not in the sense of the romance. Just who I'd defend / was annoying me less.
At first I sided with Melanie because the humans are being colonized and these... what did they ever call themselves? Worms? Spiders? Souls? Were just going around colonizing planets. Granted, I will note they had a semi-peaceful way of living but only amongst those of their own. (red flag). But as time went on and Wanda became more humanized and Melanie became more angsty (a classic teenager.. I assume she's still in her teens?) I was siding with Wanda.
Lowkey, I kind of hoped Wanda would've died. I think it would've been a tragically beautiful end. But then they went and... stole a human body for her? And no, they couldn't have chosen an adult but a minor ????????????
Let's talk about the romance. So I'll note, I was team Ian until Jared was the one who snuck out to help Wanda get cryotanks. But, I think he was doing that with ulterior motives because he just wanted Melanie (like get away from her you old creep). Everything made sense to me except when Wanda asked Jared to pretend to be sad that she's going away and then he kissed her ?? Like he was always kissing her with the intention of kissing Mel / getting to Mel, but then he goes and kisses Wanda? Ian would never.
but overall, I legitimately might've possibly teared up a bit when Wanda was coming to terms with killing herself off. Why was I so emotional over this?
semi-interesting concept, terrible execution. opposite of twilight (boring concept, occasionally interesting execution)
