2.5 unfortunately

i hated the pov shifts between paragraphs - i’m a big fan of getting the pov of both the characters, but i get so disoriented when within one chapter, the pov will shift after a paragraph.

also, why was there so much emphasis on the fmc being a virgin - the word was used 17 times.

the latter half also got really boring, and i was not a fan of how the mmc got the fmc to marry him and how she didn’t do anything about it.

This was SO sweet! It’s a favorite for a reason and I’m so happy to say the hype was real. This is the first historical romance where i learned so much. And even better i absolutely adored the romance in this book. When you learn the meaning of the title, the passion the two MCs had for each other… it’s makes me giddy.

Idk what trope this is but i ate it up with a fork and spoon. I’m so happy Hester got her happy ever after! She makes me want to be brave for love!

Such a delight of a story!!! This couple made me swoon so many times by their cutiness especially the way Galen treats his Indigo sweetheart. Plus those two are so passionate damn! Carriage/desk s3x, anywhere, anytime, name it. Those two are insatiable with each other. Prepare yourself. It's so nice to see Esther slowly opening herself to passion and love, especially knowing she was setting herself for a loveless mariage with someone else at first.

It was my first book from Beverly and I completely understand why this is a classic. This book aged so well and the writing feels still modern. The change of POV in the middle of chapters wasn't even unsettling like it can be with other 'oldies' historicals. Can't believe it was original published in 1996.

I was worried at first by the context of the story, with slavery, but the story manage to be light and full of romance like I love my historicals. I especially appreciated the references to real historical persons and events, and the list of books' references in the end of the book. The author did her researchs thoroughly and it transpired in the story. It was done with parsimony without weighing down the romance aspect of the story.

My first Black historical romance. Normally, I can't get over the idea that Black people would've been enslaved during stereotypical historical romance but this wove that history into every aspect of the plot and characters.

Pacing after 40% is a bit wonky but I can live with it.

Dang this book was such a journey and it was done so well. The hero and heroines chemistry and story was so well paced and I was buying it all. I was on board and moved through it all. So truly well done.
