Lone Scotsman (possibly ex spy) walks across Afghanistan (following in the footsteps of an historical figure). Usual insights on a poor worn-torn people (or sets of people). Makes me wonder if that area will ever be peaceful. Custom of marriages between cousins does not auger well.

This is an unusual book: it combines a layered sense of regional history with a plainly written, almost Victorian, travel journal. Most characters (including Stewart himself) aren't explored in any deep way, but the story taken as a whole is a fascinating portrait of a land that few outsiders (especially at the time of the book's writing) know much about.

My aunt recommended this book to me and told me the only thing I'd remember about it is the dog and she was right.
