Fascinating look at the destruction that corrupt government after corrupt government has wreaked on Afghans. The villages to which Rory travels truly are the places in between, but they are deeply touched by all the horrors that have come before; their people are seemingly broken.

Amazing book. Really gave me a new perspective on Afghanistan and the people who live there. It made me sad to see how culture is being lost.

This book wasn't all that good. I didn't like how the author constantly patronizes locals, he never cares enough to actually ask them about their life or customs. The only time he cares is when he needs to find a place to stay and then all of the sudden he starts telling someone that they are not good Muslim because they don't offer him hospitality right away.

I found these quote enjoyable and learnt some about Afghanistan and it's people. There's still a lot more is like to learn about this fascinating country however.

Fascinating. A part of the world I have never read before and probably as important as the previous book in Serbia, where the author writes of little towns barely off the map. He doesn’t do that good of a job describing these towns and I’m not sure how much he learns. I did cry at the end there. Id be interested in reading a book about the same place from another perspective. Certainly interesting to read after having pulled out of Afghanistan.
