Probably in my top 3 favorite books of all time.  I went into it thinking it was horror but it’s not at all. Definitely more of a small town southern coming of age story.

Each chapter is almost its own little story but there’s an overarching mystery that progresses within those. It reminds me of the movie Big Fish both in the mini-stories-within-a-larger-story way of story telling & in the slight fantasy vibes.

The writing is immaculate, the characters are so lovable, it’s funny, it’s sad, it’s mysterious. I didn’t want it to end.  Just read it if you’re on the fence.

This is the story of a boy coming of age in the early 1960s and what happens after he and his father witness the after-effects of a gruesome murder in their quiet hometown. It’s also a story about friends and bullies, love and loss, acceptance and racism, bravery and fear. It was at times funny, touching, disgusting, and disturbing. I think it accomplished what it set out to do and did it very well.

You know a book is good when even halfway through you know it's going to be a new all time favourite. Wow this one blew me away. Highly highly recommend.
