This book is exactly what I want in a novel:

✅ a family saga that spans across generations
✅ great character development
✅ beautiful writing
✅ opened my world up to other experiences I don’t know enough about

I can’t begin to sum up the plot and each character storyline, just read it. It’s so good.

Maybe the problem is that you can’t read Homegoing and then ever have another multigenerational story hold a candle to it? I dunno, I felt actually fairly similarly about this story as I did with Pachinko - just couldn’t get into it and felt as though the stories jumped at all the wrong times and I didn’t get enough from each character while with them.

And not to just pile on the whining but everyone seems to note how amazing and lyrical the writing is but I didn’t find that to be the case? It often felt very straightforward and not at all emotional enough. I felt so detached from every person and from the events in their lives, never given enough (or the right?) context to sink into the snapshots given and to understand their perspectives or experiences. It just really didn’t land with me.

Also (spoiler) the very last part of the book being a senior citizen / Alzheimer’s driven sex scene REALLY threw me. Would have never ever ever guessed that’s how the book would end haha.
