I think I'd imagined this was going to be a thriller, but... It was not. Maybe I'd have enjoyed it more if I'd known what I was getting into.
This is not at all the thriller that was described. If this had been labeled contemporary fiction, I would have had different expectations and would have probably enjoyed it. But as a thriller, it did not deliver. The premise is interesting, but there is no action, no major twist, and no psychological turmoil for the reader. I liked the author’s prose, but I did not enjoy how long each chapter was for each child. The narrator, Lex, was still the primary focus of each chapter, and we never learn much about the siblings despite huge sections that are supposed to be dedicated to them. I would give this author a second chance because the parts of the story that I did enjoy were enthralling; those parts were just a little too few and far between for me.
What a fascinating, and terrifying book! I couldn’t put it down.
I don't often read crime novels, however, with it being the Waterstones BOTM and one of the most intriguing blurbs I've read for a long time - I picked it up. And I'm glad I did! The narrative, jarring at times, is so well done, and the character work is impressive. I teared up many times. Abigail Dean's writing is phenomenal - she's one of those authors who has the gift of being able to entirely transport you to another place. Her descriptions of the house on Moor Woods Road and what took place there will haunt me for a long while to come. 3.5 stars!

Sooo slow. A slightly mysterious plot that doesn’t give the reader a ton of answers and, at times, hard to follow. Not my favorite book.
