DNF around page 100... the writing style left me too confused (different timelines in seemingly every paragraph! Whyyyyy?) and the story wasn’t gripping enough for me to keep going. Sorry.

DNF. I tried. I failed. My to read list is to big to be forcing myself to read a book I hate. I really wanted to like this book. I read about 60% of it and could not bring myself to go any further.

It felt impossible to enjoy this book because I had such a difficult time following the audiobook. It switched back and forth between time periods with zero warning and was just so difficult to follow that I frequently was backing up and repeating sections. I'm still not sure I understood the story 🤷🏻‍♀️

This slow paced novel is from a singular point of view and drops little morsels of information as it trods along. Every morsel leads up to the understanding of what abuse these children went through and how it stills affects them present day.

While it is slow paced the writing is just absolutely fantastic. It jumps around, which held my interest as you needed to pay attention, and it kept things moving in a way that made me we want to gobble up the next part. It was almost equally slow and fast paced.

This book is both beautiful and horrifying. The horror is so subtly conveyed it blows you away when you realize what atrocities took place.

Highly recommend to readers with patience and the ability to read dark material.
