This had so much potential for me, but it just misses the mark.
The premise was intriguing and I love a dark, disturbing thriller. It started so well, but I began to lose track of the story, with all the different children being focussed on, and the time lapses. I would have much preferred a clearer timeline, with dates for example, to distinguish how far apart events happened. It just seemed so disjointed to me.
A good thriller, but could have been great.

I received this for free through a goodreads giveaway. I loved the idea for the book.

A group of siblings living a life of confinement and abuse by their parents finally escape. They start new lives, but once their mother dies they have to confront past memories while dealing with the leftover estate.

I wanted to hear more about their relationships with each other and the abuse they survived. I felt this book was too slow for my taste. I dnf'ed this book with only 100 pages left. I don't feel fair giving it a rating since I haven't finished it.

Beautifully heartbreaking

This is definitely a story that will stick with you. The way the trauma is told, both at the time it occurs and the lingering, recurring trauma of not being able to forget, is the best example I could hope to give someone who is luckily unfamiliar. Some scenes are like a gut punch, without being obscenely visceral. I love that we are able to see how each of the siblings have managed as adults, and the story wasn't just about the escape.
I highly recommend this book, but be aware that the subject material is not pretty, nor should it be. Keep that in mind if you aren't sure about reading.

4.5 stars, So so dark but so so good. the flashbacks and current time switches were expertly executed and just enough darkness and crime relations with a hint of coming of age girl in New york/London.
