Dnf - the plot seemed good but the intro of the story instantly bored me and it didn't make me read on further

Got half way through and did not finish. The characters were all too unlikeable and the plot was slow and dragging. Lacked depth and emotion.

This wasn't as good as I was hoping. It became complicated with so many viewpoints but overall I enjoyed the writing style

I think the premise for this book is fantastic, however, the execution is poor. We know from the beginning that Lex was abused and the girl that escaped the House of Horrors. As you read you learn how it happens, and what happens to the survivors. The narrator is unreliable, and even when you find out how unreliable she is the reader is still exposed to her fantasy or lies determining how you want to look at it. While I enjoy stories that jump timelines this jumped around like popcorn in an air popper. I also don't understand the urge to create the House of Horrors into a community center. First, the community is wanting to forget what happened. Second, the house wasn't in great shape when they lived there and being vacant for 15 years unless there are architecture details worth maintaining this house really should be bulldozed, and the survivors move on with their lives. The editor really needed to do some trimming on this book as there are characters that really don't have a role in the story, but manage to take up a lot of pages. In the end i really think the author wants to take us to the setting of Wuthering Heights which is another love/hate book.

How did I find this book? It was Malala's September 2021 selection for her Fearless book club hosted through Literati.
