Wasn’t feeling it, went to look at reviews and saw a huge spoiler so I decided not to finish.
DNF @ 48% it’s impossible to get into and nearly halfway through you really don’t understand the point to any of it.
Cleverly written, with flashbacks that piece the story together which I always love.
The book started off on a good pace for me. I had immediate questions and intrigue for the story. But as it progressed I just felt less and less interested. There were parts where you would go from past to present in two seconds and it would confuse me and take me out of the book. The plot was interesting, but I just felt like it wasn’t solid. It’s a tough book to read regarding child abuse, which may have had an influence on my rating. I did find the father’s need to be important (via his church) interesting. But, it was never really expanded on. The big reveal towards the end where Evie is actually dead the entire time, didn’t feel like a huge reveal. It was just like an “oh, okay. Moving on” moment. Not a bad book, but not a really interesting one.
There was a lot of hype surrounding this book and I definitely enjoyed it! There were some predictable twists, but also some horrific details that made me sick. Books like this are hard to read, but also hard to put down. If you were a fan of Educated or The Push, I would recommend picking this one up!
(But wait to google the details of the Turpin family until you’re finished. The storylines are very similar.)

"Girl A," she said. "The girl who escaped. If anybody was going to make it, it was going to be you.”
the chapters in this book were extra long and drawn out and made it hard for me to follow the story completely. as well as many many names that i couldn't keep straight. didn't finish for lack of thrill.
I am not sure how I felt about this book. There is some very beautiful writing. The story is hard - the child abuse is hard, the after effects are hard, the relationships are painful.
I felt very removed from the story and I am guessing that was on purpose but it left me feeling hollow. I am still thinking about it. Rounding up to 3.5 stars. I am looking forward to what this writer does next.

Beautiful writing and heartbreaking story, but I just felt a bit drowsy when reading it, not sure why.
