Love the author and all of her Cuba series books, but this one wasn’t my favorite. The storyline was interesting and covered a part of history I wasn’t super familiar with. But just not as engaging as her other books in the series.

The writing was overly dramatic and trying too hard to be profound.

Interesting period of time that isn't written about often, but the book itself is relatively unmemorable. I did skip the second and third books of the series though so perhaps I was missing the backstory of the family.
This book bounced around a lot between main coasters and between past and present so I found it disorienting to read. I learned a lot but I love her previous Cuba based books better.

Historical fiction is not my usual genre but this book sounded interesting so I gave it a try. Since I borrowed it from the library, I was unaware that it was the 4th in a series but I do not think I missed out on much by reading this one and not the others. The start of this book was fast-paced and page-turning, but towards the 70% mark, it slowed down considerably. I liked a lot of the characters and I enjoyed learning about their circumstances. I feel like some of the romance was forced though and I did not enjoy that aspect. Also, the last few chapters were difficult to get through as the descriptions became long a little repetitive. Overall, I think the author is very descriptive and does a great job of captivating their audience.
