I loved this book! I listened to it, and would highly recommend the audio version. Wow, those readers are talented! I listened to the first half last year, and then my loan ended before I could finish it and I didn't get back into the queue.

But a year later the story and all it's details were still sticking with me (which is unusual for me). I'm so glad I got back in the queue and finished it.

The characters Strong creates are tangible and so well written. I could not predict the plot and was just absorbed by the experience of the story.

This book was really beautiful, I love Washburn’s prose, he really knows how to do a run on sentence perfectly and impactful. I also really enjoyed the varying perspectives, it really weaved the web of the Flores family’s attitudes and motivations. My favorite point of view was definitely Malia’s. The depiction of Hawaii, nature and mythology were amazing. The book had a few slow spots, but the ending was so poetic and really wrapped up the story nicely.

A strong beginning but then it all goes consistently downhill. The prose, which was kind of punchy and bright in the first part, becomes more labored and as if the author is making sure he gets MEANING in every sentence. The siblings' voices become blurred and they feel more like stereotypes who serve to manipulate the plot rather than real people. I also had trouble with how many times I was reminded of 1) Everything I Never Told You and 2) There There. However, all that being said, I believe Washburn has tons of raw talent and is undoubtedly teeming with ideas; I will try his next offering.
