I loved the first 2/3 of this book. I ended up finishing the last 1/3 on audio. Wasn’t sure if it was the audio or the the pace of the story but felt like the Portland and San Diego chapters dragged. Loved every bit of the story that happened in Hawaii.!

It took me awhile to finish this book, maybe because it took me awhile to really reflect and understand, not because it was abstract but because Kawai Strong Washburn was writing about something that I feel/felt but haven't been able to describe. I'm not Hawaiian, I'm Mexican but unlike the characters in this book I was't born there I was born and raised in New York. Reading the book I recognized the feeling that you get that there is magic in a place, that is how I feel every time I go to the town my family is from in Mexico. There is so much and I wish I could do it justice here but I can't.

One of the most stunning books I've read in a while. I began in print but switched to audio, and I must say, the audiobook is incredible. With a full cast and narration to match the written dialect, I was fully immersed in this story and the world of this family. I got chills, I cried (several times), and I was utterly captivated. It's a heavy story, but an unforgettable one.
