A rough family drama steeped in Hawaiian culture. Deeply moving and the characters all hold their own challenges that make them compelling. But it really thrives when the family dynamic is present - even if the family is not, the characters are driven by duty or resentment or something in between to do what they do.
And the whole one of them maybe being a savior was cool too. But the family stuff is what makes this book so readable.

wow!!! so strong and so specific and so enjoyable. absolutely loved reading this and being able to picture the big island locations bc it's where I live and work, that feels very special. makes me want to read more books set where I'm living, which I don't think I've made a conscious effort to do before. the voice and tone of each narrator is so great, and recognizable, and as always a book with multiple narrator's who know each other well ends up reflecting everyone's warped visions of each other. Malia and Dean describing kaui especially I loved. lots of great lines and sentiments. beautiful beautiful imagery and loose magical thinking. very special and original and immersive.
