I really wanted to like this. I just struggle so much with books that are this poetic in language. It feel unnecessary and pretentious to me. The story was good and I liked having the multiple perspectives from the family.

Really enjoyed this magic realism family story of leaving and reclaiming your roots, and how sacred destiny can stay with a person even when they leave home. The characters felt heartbreakingly real, and the way native Hawai'ian practices are intertwined is really impactful.
