This book has some lovely writing and the setting is very detailed. I love many elements of the story. And it felt so tragic, so heavy, so lonely, that I didn't want to keep going.

Read this for AllisonPaiges's Pocket Pages Book Club March pick
After trying to start this book back in 2020 when it came out and also purchasing the paperback when it came out yet not starting it, I took the opportunity to join the Pocket Pages Book Club to motivate me.
And would you look at that, I really liked this book.
This story, all in all, is about family and your home and the people that reside in your home. In this story, it was Hawai'i.
When their middle son was saved by sharks, it confirmed to them that Nainoa was 'different' and 'special'. They really had no idea how special he was.
I read my physical copy in conjunction with the audiobook as it is Migraine March and the experience was wonderful. The way the story is written, it's truly as if you're sitting on the beach during a bonfire with this family as they retell their history from 1995 to 2009. I've come to notice that I truly enjoy when novels are written that way, especially in this genre.
This story is full of characters with many flaws and struggles, characters who are not perfect, keep that in mind when you go into it.
Just to make it known, the N-word is used twice on the same page by two characters. Once by a Black character and once used by a white character, which used the hard R. I just wanted to put it out there so it doesn't catch you by surprise like it did me.
I'm glad to have read this story and can definitely see myself rereading it in the future and seeing more things in between the lines that I didn't this time around.

Nainoa falls into the pacific ocean on a family cruise and finds himself encircled by sharks. This seems like a kind of ending, but when the sharks deliver the boy safely to his family in their jaws, his parent's can't help but wonder if this is some kind of sign from the hawaian gods that there is favor and purpose over Nainoa. Nainoa discovers inside him a special gifting and he uses that gift to bring wealth and pride to his family, but this disguised blessing becomes a burdensome weight on Nainoa.
Sharks in the Time of Saviors masterfully weaves together magical realism and a generational family saga. Everything I love about stories with magical realism elements is present here. I love it when magical elements don't over power a story's plotline. The focus in this novel aren't so much on Nainoa's uniqe abilities but on the juxtaposition of blessing and burden he and his family experience as a result.
This is one of the most unique plots and stories I have ever read. I loved the incorporation of Hawaiian mythology and the beautiful flow of the novel. I loved the characters and the way the story unfolded and flowed so beautifully. I finished this weeks ago and I still find myself lost in the internal struggle of this family. Its a beautiful kind of lost. I didn't come out of this book easily. A piece of me is still there and I love when a book pulls you into orbital alignment and holds you there long after it is finished.
I can't believe this book has flown so under the radar! It deserves the accolade that lesser books published in the same year garnered!
I listened to this on audiobook. The cast of the audio narration were fantastic! I highly recommend giving this a shot on audiobook!
