The Poison Within

Kasia Bacon

4.06 AVERAGE

3.5 stars

Set in the Order universe, this short Käyru Skaer, who is an inspector, and Ellydhar Finn-Jánn, who is a count of the area.

The two have been hooking up for the past few years, but social status has kept it as that as anything more permanent is still frowned upon in human society.

A bloody murder that is not what is seems, brings the two closer to accepting the true extent of their feelings.

I liked this story despite it having several elements to it that I generally do not appreciate. I am not a fan of serials. Despite this I truly enjoyed The Poison Within. It came to enough of a conclusion for me not to feel messed about by the author. Further, I'm not a fan of raped women as a plot device. And while I cringed to see it used here, it wasn't so anchorless as to make me rage (just snarl a little bit). The use of current events, disguised in a fantasy setting often feels didactic, but Bacon managed it here without feeling as if she was lecturing the reader. It's not everyday that you find yourself liking a story largely composed of pieces that normally chip away at what makes a story enjoyable in the first place.

I liked Käyru a lot and I liked his descriptions of and feelings for Elly, though I didn't feel I got to know Elly at all. I even liked Käyru's second, Temper. He was the closest thing to a true side character the story had. The writing was sharp and clean, as was the editing. I'll be looking forward to more of this serial.

I liked this. It's really sweet. I guess I can say it's about an established couple, even though formally they're not together. I think this should be read after you at least read [b:The Mutt|33792180|The Mutt (The Order #1)|Kasia Bacon|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1483968238s/33792180.jpg|54684425] or [b:The Highlander|35096381|The Highlander (The Order #2)|Kasia Bacon|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1502797524s/35096381.jpg|56400634], in order to understand the world a little better.
Right in the middle there was a bit of confusion between the MCs, where they chose not to talk to each other, one totally ghosted the other. That, I didn't like. I feel like there should've been a little more communication between them.
But it was great, just short. :(
3.5 stars! Recommend it.

Oh wow! I agree with some of the other comments I've read. I want more!

I like the world the author built and I want to read more. I like the author's note she had at the beginning and it made perfect sense. Sadly, it's still so prevalent! :(

I can't wait for more! More Kayru and Elly please!

Oh, this is an enticing bit of story that left me wanting for more. It's really hard to say something without spoiling the whole thing, but I can say this: I'm utterly besotted with this Universe and I want more :P

Michael Fox is excellent narrating the story :)

Well, what do you know, now I am an addict :)

I love everything in this story! Love that the author drew the ideas from RL, events we all can relate to and reflect upon. Love the female characters, who are - a breath of fresh air - wholesome, love the social differences, love a vulnerable character or two and how protective their lovers are. Love the no-nonsense of KB's writing, straight to the point. Just ...perfect, if short. Moar please! =)

A fantasy tale with a timely nod to events happening in the world today.

Tightly written, the whole tale is told in about an hour and yet I didn't feel short-changed. The characters were well rounded, the world-building excellent, and justice is swift and not necessarily black and white. Morally dubious decisions are made with the best of intentions and we have yet to reap the consequences of these actions. The 'to be continued' on the last page implied we'll be seeing more of these two and I can only wait patiently* and hope.

*definition of patience: jumping up and down and shouting 'is it ready yet?'.

Kasia Bacon is a bloody genius, I don't care what anyone else thinks, her ability to craft such detailed glimpses into a richly populated and living world is incredible.

She is a wordsmith of the highest order and this one, set in the same world but featuring different characters than The Mutt and The Highlander, is another triumph.

The thinly disguised mirroring of what's been happening in our 'real' world cleverly plays out against a backdrop of how far people are willing to go for those they love.

It's brilliant and I want more.

#ARC received from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review.

Such a beautiful and captivating short story. I fell in love with the characters immediately. I also enjoyed the flash fiction bonus story featuring the Furia character. Definitely a story I plan on revisiting. I want more stories with Elly and Kayru.
