This contemporary, queer adaptation of EM Forster’s Howard End kept me coming back for the way in which López was grafting the queer experience back onto a classic text. Of course, there was a lot to strive for here, and, unfortunately, for me, it didn’t quite get there. I think dialogue couldn’t quite capture some of the soul of Forster’s beautiful novel. Alas, I did appreciate reading more about Forster’s legacy and his enduring influence on literature.

I saw this on broadway and the scene at the end of Part 1 was so beautiful to see in the theater, all the actors in Henry and Walter’s Upstate House. I really wish I had the words to describe how I feel about this show on audio. Because even though you’re not seeing it the emotion is still there! It’s fucking beautiful. One of my favorite moments is where Jasper is all up on his high horse and begins saying saying something to Henry about “gay men your age” and Henry shouts at him “THERE ARE NO GAY MEN MY AGE” in part 2 breaks my heart! And also there’s a scene where Kyle confronts E.M. Forster about why he stayed closeted for so long! It was amazing. I think this show needs to be adapted into a movie! It’s so incredible and something about the way the actors put so much emotion into their performances! Ugh!

I just read the newly published THE INHERITANCE by Matthew Lopez, running on the West End now. I wish I could see it in performance, but on the page it is a stunning work that is rich in language, character, and structure. An epic two-parter modeled after HOWARD'S END, it follows the lives of modern gay men in New York and their relation to the generation lost to AIDS and to earlier generations like E.M. Forster's. I don't when or how or if we can ever see it outside the major cities (did I mention it is a two-parter?) but I think this will be a touchstone play for a new generation.
