“That’s the point of it, Bryce. Of life. To live, to love, knowing that it might all vanish tomorrow. It makes everything that much more precious.”
Maas definitely had a really good murder mystery here. But she doesn't really give any clues to who the murderer is as you're going. All the sudden at the end the villain storms in and monologues for at least 10 pages and puts all the pieces together. It makes me feel like the murderer was sort of just shoved into that role.
The MMC gets a weird plot twist that doesn't fit what's going on either - she wanted the main characters to have a reason to disagree after they start moving towards a relationship - this is a trend with her novels, it's tiring.
The world and concepts are unique enough, except, angels with guns and literal frat boy fae make me cringe so hard.
Another arrogant MFC - unlike her other characters, Bryce uses it as a mask. Bryce is also barely likable - her level of devotion to her friend is definitely romance level dedication which seems strange for a platonic same sex friendship.
The ending where Bryce gets her powers (because we all knew it was coming) feels really corny and rushed.
