Loved the characters and the story. It even made me cry. I just would have loved to see Emma and Jesse try a little bit more I think.. Like for them to take more time to reach a decision.

This book has an interesting premise, but I found the characters flat and their motivations nonsensical. I am generally a TJR enjoyer for her fresh takes on classic tropes but this one was just too unrealistic to get invested in.

The first chapter of this book you learn that Emma Blair is about to be married to Sam, when her husband Jesse calls. He has been missing for about 3 years, lost at sea and presumed dead. He was the love of her life. But at a point, she allowed herself to move on, and now her life is complicated.
Such a beautiful love story to find out who she is now.
“You are my one true love. I don’t even think I’m capable of loving anyone else.” P68
“But I’m starting to think you don’t always know what your dreams are. Some of us have to run smack into one before we see it.” P114
“Don’t my dreams, the rope and the knots, I know exactly what they mean.
You don’t tie yourself to something unless you’re scared you might float away.” P141
“Do you ever get over loss? Or do you just find a box within yourself, big enough to hold it? Do you just stuff it in there, push it down and snap the lid on it? Do you just work, every day, to keep the box shut?” P233
“I don’t think you’re trying to figure out if you love Sam more or Jesse more. I think you’re trying to figure out if you want to be the person you are with Jesse or you want to be the person you are with Sam.” P200

This book had me sobbing every fifty pages. Oh my god. This was my first Taylor Jenkins Reid book and I am so glad that I started with this. I don't think any characters have ever riveted my heart like Emma, Jesse, and Sam did. I HATE love triangles but I absolutely LOVEDE this. It was so well done. Will forever be a TJR stan.
The way this book was structured was intensely beautiful. From describing in parts the way Emma fell in love with Jesse (allowing the reader to fall in love with Jesse) to doing a play-by-play on how she fell in love with Sam (again, making the reader fall in love with Sam) after Jesse went missing. The choice Emma is presented with is an impossible one, but I think it was beautifully navigated by TJR in terms of appreciating the past and letting go. The terms of taking what the past has given you and loving it whilst knowing your present is the future is a concept that is vitally important in this book, resonating deeply with me. It felt refreshing, breathtaking, and heartbreaking all at once, making it one of my favorite novels I've read all year.
Taylor Jenkins Reid describing grief is something else entirely. I don't think I've ever physically reacted to a piece of writing before like I did with that aspect. She deserves a noble prize for that description. The intensity of the truth in the account of how Emma felt and grew from that grief felt so raw and real and completely made me jump back to points in my life where I have felt that misery. The concept of love is so intricate and complex; I appreciate how this book acknowledges that and provides an exploration of it. Truly a wonderful literary journey.
