Compelling family drama. Was a bit difficult initially to get used to the time shifts of each chapter but hard to put down once all the characters were identified.

A little confusing because so many characters are introduced and followed at once, but overall it was interesting to read about the relationships between them.
I was so sad when I finished this book. I loved every single character. They all made mistakes, they were flawed and real, and ultimately just the kind of people we all have in our lives. I loved that the "kids" in the family didn't resent each other even during times when they didn't like each other. Patchett didn't resort to the usual, worn-out character stereotypes... instead family members disagreed with each other, disapproved of some choices, and were sometimes disappointed in the others, but in the end it's family and family forgives.
A well written family novel with problematic characters. Wistful in tone, the book makes the most sense as a set of interconnected short stories.

Interesting characters, but why did Patchett give voice to only some of the children/parents. I also wonder about the significance of guns in this book - I haven't figured out what they're supposed to symbolize, if anything. Hmm
