These are quaint books, set in a sort of miniature-Oxford-like town cut off from the real world. I expected this second book to be a new story linked to the first, but it's very much a direct continuation which expects the reader to remember the previous book vividly (which I did not). Even the list of characters at the start doesn't really help keep track of the large cast (of predominately middle-aged men) and help you remember who has been doing what and why. It's overarching feeling is of a fantastical version of 'Last of the Summer Wine'. Despite some of these drawbacks, I found its complexity satisfying, and it has some imaginative and entertaining scenes. I'm going to have to go straight onto book three though so I still remember (mostly) what happened here!
Minor: Body horror
