I wanted to cry at some places. Not even the sad places but after she meets her husband because the whole thing plays out like a film where he's a little overwhelmed by her world but he sees the good in her and there's so much good in Ms. Pat. It's like watching a sitcom for 10 seasons and finally seeing the lead win without the other shoe dropping. The first half of this book is sad in a "she was a kid who deserved better" but it's this weird double edged sword because you can teach a child better but there's always outside influences at bay but she made it through and become my favorite comedian and the star of my favorite sitcom The Ms Pat Show

Am I a jerk for giving a memoir about really hard shit less than five stars? Maybe, but it's mostly because I wanted more, does that help? I wanted the author to go in more detail in some of the more recent years of her life and not stick so much to the "I made it out of the hood and turned my life around" storyline I'm sure the publisher wanted to push.

All that aside, this book was WILD. It's one of those books that my privileged ass reads and just cannot fathom that someone actually has a life like this. Every minute in the first 75% or so was one insane thing after another. I can't say I've read many books from that POV, so I am really glad that I did read it, and I can't say I'll easily forget it either.

Recommended by a friend on bookstagram as part of the 12 in 12 challenge. PLEASE check the content warnings before reading. So glad I listened to this one as an audiobook, to hear Ms. Pat’s story told in her own words. It’s a raw and emotional read that will stick with me for a long time.

I really enjoyed this book! Aside from much of the content being graphic (many would consider it to be deeply unsettling), it was beautifully written.

I really identified with her reflections on family. I appreciate her bravery/courage to share so much with us, because *wOw* the way my jaw dropped as I was reading.

She really ended generational curses and I'm so proud of her for that. I can only hope to do the same in my own life. If you're looking to diversify your books on the black experience THIS is the one. Highly recommend.
