No words.. I loved this friends to lovers and the marriage of convenience. It was two tropes thrown together to make a beautiful story. Raven’s insecurities was so heartbreaking, feeling second best her WHOLE life to Ares putting her first

Okay, this one was a big bag of mixed tricks for me to read and rate. On one hand, the cover and the blurb were so alluring that I could not not read this book. But on the other hand, parts of the book were so annoying that I was scoffing like it was getting out of style at each new chapter. And also, I can't say I am a big fan of 'banging my sister's ex-bf of many years' trope, no matter how evil and scheming the sister is. I feel icky with the 'baggage' reality of this trope.
The writing was decent, in some parts magnificently done, so that was not the problem. No, my biggest issue was the loads of character contradictions that bogged down the plot enjoyment. Esp. the way the main characters kept saying one thing and then doing another thing. And then guess what? It was rinse and repeat, rinse and repeat etc, especially in the first 40% of the book. It got much better in the other 60% of the book, but then the drama shifted for full OW drama with now a rinse and repeat cycle of the h's insecurities and the H reassuring her. But I do have to say that angst was very well done, if you like angst telenovela style.
My advice, if any reader would care to have it? Forget about the first 28 chapters. Just take my word that the H and h were forced into a marriage of convenience and that they are now navigating choppy waters as they adjust to their new status. I can even write down a synopsis of the main plot points. Trust me, it will save you a world of eye rolling and swearing.
At this point, I am including the rest of my review under spoiler tags because I have much to comment and rant about. Skip if you have better things to do.

So, why were these first chapters so infuriating? Because these were the hardest to read due to Ares's thoughts, words and actions being so contradictory in the most annoying way possible. I wanted to strangle him every time he made empty and worthless promises to Raven. I fully believe he was sincere when he uttered them but each time, he would do the opposite of what he promised. For example, Ares promised this, on his very own volition:[Ares's pov; at the altar, they just got married.]
I take a step closer to her and gently cup her cheek before dropping my forehead to hers. “This is it,” I whisper. “From this moment forward, you’re my wife. Mine to care for, mine to cherish, and mine to protect. I know this isn’t what you would’ve wanted for yourself, but I swear I’ll give you my all, Raven.”
Nice and cute right? And this is what he does the very next day, when a few minutes earlier, Raven recalled to him the promise he made:
[Raven's pov; one day after the wedding, Hannah arrives into their home, uninvited.]
“Ares,” she says, her voice shaky. “How could you? She’s my sister, for God’s sake. This…” She looks between us, insecurity flashing through her eyes. “You two… are you…”
“No,” Ares says instantly. “Never. I’ve never loved anyone but you, Hannah. I never will. How could I possibly want someone other than you?”

finally finished this awful book, who cheered
wish i could give it zero stars but i want to ruin its avg rating so 1 star from me and that's me being generous. this is probably the worst book i read in 2024 and unless i'm dying i'm positive i'm going to read more books. i've never read anything by this author and wish i could say i won't read anything but i need xavier and sierra sb. am i going to read the entire series bc i want every discussion they've had? yes.
the plot: ares (mc) and hannah (fc's sister) have been dating since 5 years but raven (fc) has always loved him. raven introduced hannah to ares and she regrets it, because he was supposed to marry her (they have a family thing) but one day he woke up and said it's hannah i'm going to marry. bc he thought he slept with hannah, he actually slept with raven but hannah made him believe it was her and he's been having the same dream ever since
on paper it sounds perfect but there are so many things wrong with this book
ares winsdor: everyone knows the hate i have for xander knight and zade meadows but dare i say ares winsdor is probably the worst fictional character ive read about. he's engaged to hannah but he can't stop thinking about her.
things he said:
this would've been okay if he wasn't actually claiming to be in love with her sister. he wants her sister, but he wants her too. i wish the sisters realise there's a huge plot twist and they're not sisters and fall for each other after the epilogue .
this was at 3% and i had zero feelings for any of them but he literally chose the wrong fucking sister?? i know he pulled a 'ive always loved you' but buying you a necklace while you sleep with her sister, are getting married to her is acceptable??
one week after he broke up with his ex fiance. i have no words
theres probably more but i literally cannot do more so deal with it x
raven she started off good and i loved how she made him realise how bad he's hurt her but the conversations were repetitive as fuck, she was insecure after every two pages and i get it she was hurt and all but author this book would've been a 2 star read if you hadn't ruined it.
the one star is for massage scene btw
side characters: i love love sierra sm. need her book in my hands
wish i read this instead of wasting my 2 days
xavier: iconic.
anyways i'm still going to read the other books i rlly hope i end up liking them

He looks enthralled, and I shift my weight from one foot to another uncomfortably. I want nothing short of happiness for Raven, but the thought of her falling for someone fills me with dread.

“Try it on,” he tells me.
I shake my head. “Oh no, I can’t. This is for Hannah. I can tell she’d love it without trying it on.”
Ares shakes his head and reaches around me, putting the necklace on me. The way his fingers graze over my skin sends a shiver running down my spine, and he doesn’t even realize it.
“If you like it, I’ll buy it for you, Raven. We can find something else for Hannah.”

"I can’t believe I’ve been staying away from her when I could’ve had this all along. One night with her, and I think I’m already addicted.

She smiles at me and holds up the nightgown she bought me. “If you two end up sleeping together, he’ll end up falling for you. I know you think he’ll never stop loving your sister, but I call bullshit. He’s always looked at you a certain way, and there’s always been this unshakeable bond between you two. He just needs a push. Ares is a man of morals, and so long as he thinks he’s doing right by both Hannah and you by staying away, he will. Give him a reason to fold. Honestly, if you just outright tell him you want him to meet your physical needs, he’d fall as fast as a house of cards. I know he wants you. He just won’t admit it to himself.”
