DID NOT FINISH: 15%

like to get at least 10% before i dnf because it's hard enough for me already... this was just not grabbing me whatsoever unfortunately.

The initial blurb for this book had me very intrigued, but it didn't quite deliver for me. It didn't grip me like other thrillers have, so it took longer than expected for me to finish it. When I read the premise, I was drawn in by the promise of Y2K nostalgia. Aside from the mention of it being NYE 1999 and taking place in a Blockbuster, there's nothing else to place us in that time period, and the flashbacks were very limited. I wanted it to lean into that element more. Unfortunately, I also saw some plot twists from a mile away.

What a terrific read. Great mix of mystery and suspense with believable characters. I enjoyed my first Alex Findlay! What’s next? Another good read, I hope!

Such a speedy read. After finishing Outlaw, where the chapters were 40 plus pages, this was a nice change of pace for a book. Super short, digestible chapters kept the plot moving. It made it hard for me to stop in the evening and go to bed because I could have easily finished this book in one sitting.

In terms of the book's content, there were many layers to the characters. I felt that I was constantly becoming aware of a connection to another character I had not seen before. It solidified a small-town feel in the book, even though that is not the exact setting. This book did, for me, what I wanted God of the Woods to do: keep me invested even though there are multiple moving parts and decades being crossed. Although I had a hunch (and a correct one at that) from the beginning about the major plot reveal, many sub-plots surprised me, so realizing the big reveal did not bother me.

Overall, this was a quick, engaging read. If I had tried hard enough, I could have easily finished it in a day.

DID NOT FINISH

“If I suck your dick, will you get me another Cherry Coke?”

This is the line that made me DNF. It's said unironically by a jaded barely legal prostitute to her public defender, I'm guessing to really to drive home how grim and jaded his life is. Everything is greyscale and dry and dull. There's a murder happening but everything about it is boring, way too many characters and all of the lifeless, and everything feels so flat it's like an elephant stomped on it. Life is too short for this bland cliche soup.

I can't believe Goodreads pushed this book so hard at me for months except of course I can. But do yourself a favor and don't read it.
