I have received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Rebel Daughter sounded like it was going to be an amazing book. I mean the synopsis made it sound like something I would enjoy. Unfortunately, I'm not a huge fan of religious aspect of this. Even though it had some interesting parts to it.. I just hated how people were viewed in this. Especially when it came to marriage.
Now I've never been married but I do know people who have been in an arranged marriage. They've mentioned the amount of pressure that gets put on them in order to go through with it and honestly - it's not for me. Sorry, I'm so used to being a disappointment that I wouldn't even hesitate to say no and stick to my guns.
In it, you will meet Esther. She kind of reminds me of Elizabeth Bennet, in a way, because of how she wanted to marry for love. Even though I didn't like either of her choices - the one she thought she loved and the one her parents picked her to love. Both of them sucked and I just wasn't getting the chemistry. However, with the Roman - I could totally see it.
This book goes through some tough topics but it was necessary to do so. It was definitely eye opening and it made this a page turner (for me). In the end, I'm pretty happy that I got a holiday weekend where I could find the time to knock this one out. Definitely glad that I got the chance to dive into it.

Rebel Daughter was one of my anticipated releases from a Jewish author including Jewish representation. I am embarrassed to admit that I misinterpreted the subject of this book, thinking it was about Queen Esther from the Purim story. In fact, it is about another strong woman named Esther who lived during the time of the Roman occupation of the biblical Israel, up until the destruction of the second Temple in 70 CE. I am sure I learned about this time period in Jewish history, and yet I did not know how difficult life was at the time and how the Jewish people were treated following the Roman success in the final battle that destroyed the Temple.
Some of the characters in the book are based on real people, and if I had been more in tune to the history I might have realized who Joseph in the story was before it was revealed! Esther is not a person I have heard of, but I imagine she lived as she was described in this very detailed book. It is not an easy read, as it contains details of war time and some of it can be upsetting. I learned so much from this book and will certainly read anything else that this author writes in the future!

This book was well-written, but I wasn't really into the characters. The MC Esther wasn't really a "rebel daughter" at all. So 3 stars for a mostly interesting history and vivid descriptions, but characters/plot were just meh.
I love that the author’s inspiration for this story was a 2000 year old headstone discovered in Italy - the headstone of a former Jewish slave who died a free woman at age 25. There is so much well-researched detail about life during this time and about the Jewish war and the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem. The writing wasn’t stellar but was certainly good enough.
