3.3/5 well written detective work. I tended to feel a bit bored at parts but I enjoyed the main character and his assistant interviewing characters. There were quite a lot of storylines and characters that I got pretty confused the last quarter of the book.

*spoiler alert*
There were some parts that bewildered me. Why did Mr. Bestigui lock his wife out on the balcony on a random cold night?? Very random and specific act. Also why would a murderer pay a private investigator to investigate the death of his victim when it had been ruled a suicide and he had gotten away with it??

The way strike relayed the entire story of what happened the day of Lula’s death was so specific and random that it lost it’s clever charm to me. I love a good whodunnit mystery story with a clever twist that is in the scope of reality. The way the puzzle pieces in this story didn’t make sense how Strike came to the conclusion of it- especially since we followed him to all his interviews. I definitely didn’t come to the same conclusion as he did.

Overall JK Rowling wrote this beautifully and I enjoyed Strike and Robin’s characters and their developing relationship.

I found this story to be quite convoluted with so many “clues” that ended up being pointless. I still don’t know why it’s titled “the cuckoos calling”- what ?

I  have no problem saying that this could have just been the wrong book at the time for me. I really struggled to get into it and wasn’t drawn to keep picking it up. By nearly 40% I just did not care about the characters or the mystery or what may happen. So I put it down.

With over 36 thousand reviews, no one will bother to read one more. Never mind, I like wasting time, especially since it has its pseudo-professional term: procrastinating.
So here it goes:
I don´t care about the story, I found it boring. The victim did not spark even a tiny bit of sympathy in me. Why would I care?
The selling points in this book are the detective and his assistant. They´re very likable and these glimpses into their personalities and personal lives are the best parts of this entire book.
I will go for the next books in this series since I heard a lot of good about them.

Rounding up slightly for a book I think should get 3.75 stars. I really liked the old school private investigator feel with his sidekick Robin. The book jumps in narration between the two and I thought that was really fun. It definitely felt like a grownup mystery by JK Rowling (Aka Robert Galbraith). While the story itself is mostly a clean whodunnit, it is definitely written for adults. I enjoyed the characters so much I immediately jumped into Book 2 of the series. I don’t always do that. Audio version has a terrific British narrator.

I thought it was very well written, and kept the mystery till the end (I was a bit surprised by who the murderer was). If you like mysteries, you will enjoy this book!
