I am starting to read anything by Dianne Wolfer that iI can get my hands on, as the oldest Primary students have been paired with her as their Author Penpal.  I enjoyed the balance of narrative and events being portrayed through an exchange of letters.  I especially like that we get to imagine Jim's postwar life.  Shell shock is briefly introduced, but Wolfer manages to express its debilitating nature. With photos and illustrations this has the feel of a story that actually happened.  Lovely resolution for horse-lovers.

James and I have read some beautiful picture books about the Light Horses of WWI so we wanted a book that went a bit deeper. This was an excellent read, but I am glad we read it aloud, together.
